MAKING YOUR BUSINESS
SOUND BETTER
As an example, in the dance world’s early days of music editing, it was often necessary for choreographers to edit their own music. Most of the time this involved dubbing one cassette tape to another, pausing the recording tape as necessary to complete the edits. The most significant drawbacks of this method were the inaccuracies of the edit points and the fact that you could only do a straight cut. In addition, cassette tapes would begin to wear out with repeated attempts at getting the edit “just right”, and sound quality suffered. Editing music digitally has changed everything.
The precision possible with digital editing is extraordinary—accurate to about 1/44000 of a second. In addition to straight cuts, crossfades (one piece of music fades out while another fades in) and mixes are possible to insure the most creative, best sounding final product.
